Today the homogenization of water often appears to have gotten the upper hand: people see water as uniform and inert, and they are hard pressed to identify their water, its qualities, and its origins. Mineral waters, however, retain their specificity, heterogeneity, and efficacy in the minds of their users. This book concludes that such experiences are vitally important to any project of reconstructing our relation to water and that our daily interactions with water—bathing and drinking in particular—are potential sites for this. The wealth of varied practices, ideas, and values that make up this heterogeneity may help us move our relationship to water in a more sustainable, less damaging direction.
