    Chapter 2 introduces mehfil-e mawlud, a ritual event revolving around the recitation of Urdu devotional poetry popular among Mauritian Muslims, who are of Indian origin. The ethnography is contextualized through detailed discussion of the historical background of Mauritian Muslims and the competing South Asian Islamic reformist and piety movements prevailing among them. The main focus of the chapter is an examination of the intertwining of devotional ritual practices and sound reproduction, resulting in a particular domestication of this media technology into established, genealogical forms of Islamic authority.
