Chapter from the book: Whitmore, L. 2018. Mountain, Water, Rock, God: Understanding Kedarnath in the Twenty-First Century.

Whitmore introduces the reader to Kedarnath and relates what happened to Kedarnath during the floods of 2013. Using several ethnographic vignettes, he introduces the core argument of the book—that Kedarnath can usefully be usefully viewed as a Shiva-oriented place that, in human experience, functions as an ecosocial system characterized by complexity.
