The introduction sets out the terms of frame-by-frame analysis, showing how it disrupts the flow of the cartoon to reveal the individual frames and images that comprise it. This means a focus on the role of photography, on the one hand, in the preservation of each collection of cels and, on the other, on the arrangement of the fragments in a form of montage. The impetus for this dual approach, the treatment of frames at once as a document and as an aesthetic object, has its origin in the writings of Sergei Eisenstein and Walter Benjamin. It also emerges from the American avant-garde, and the films of Robert Breer and Ken Jacobs.
