The conclusion explores the way that animated cartoons in the 1950s sought to reproduce the look of live-action film. Arguing against contemporary critics who saw these films as evading the radical potential of animation to do something different, the chapter shows that the act of simulating cinematic technique in fact produced formal strategies impossible in live-action cinema. The focus in the chapter is on deep space compositions, and how the style of a film like Cinderella (1950) is deceptively complex. It concludes with a meditation on the frame-by-frame method, and the joint necessity of labor and play it requires.
