This chapter explores the shifting meanings of Arabic geographical referents and cultural concepts, including the title Nafir Suriyya itself. Butrus al-Bustani experimented with language in order to urge his compatriots to learn the right lessons from the past and adopt the right forms of sociability necessary to turn the page on the civil war. The chapter offers critical reflections of al-Bustani’s incorporation of new “race and civilization” language.
