This chapter examines the first of three types of writing about music from the era of the twelve-maqam system: technical treatises about music. These texts reveal the epistemological logic underlying the structural concepts of the twelve-maqam system. It correlates the musical structures described in chapter 2 with premodern concepts of knowledge, universal order, and the absolute structure of music in relation to universal order.
