    This chapter argues that two of the signature features of the 2016 US presidential elections, the rise of widespread conspiracy theorizing and the re-emergence of the term “fake news”, are an outgrowth of the shifts around digital technology and independent media production and their impact on traditional, mainstream media. It considers a new type of media outlet, referred to as the ‘midstream media’ and its appearance in the context of a splintering news media where distinct boundaries between advertising, public relations, journalism and of course documentary are slowly dissolving
