The monasteries of Zege have had a historically ambiguous relationship to the Ethiopian state. Sometimes they have sheltered the local populace from state impositions; at other times, the monasteries have appeared as a state-like force in their own right. This chapter unravels the complex history of religious and political power in Zege, showing how a class of para-church dignitaries used to act as key power brokers. We then follow the changes in religious practice that have accompanied the decline of monastic authority.
