Orthodox Christians in Zege insist that mediation is necessary for religion; you must have go- betweens for humans to relate to God. This chapter considers the work of priests and other religious experts, and it shows how the uncertain boundary between humans and God actually creates a wide variety of intermediary figures—from priests, saints, and angels to esoteric magicians and renegade debtera church scholars.
