Scholars of water have developed robust discussions about the relation of irrigation and water infrastructure to centralized power, but they have neglected the most common interactions we have with water: bathing and drinking. The focus on these aspects of everyday “water cultures” shows us that people conserve an idea of heterogeneous waters, defined by their local environments, intrinsic qualities, and agential powers. The history of these understandings of the “virtues” of waters reveals both the popular and ancient and the scientific and modern character of ontological difference in environmental knowledge and practice.
