    This chapter presents a survey of scholarship in the Arabic eleventh century, together with biographical sketches of the four scholars who are the main subject matter of the book: ar-Rāġib al-Iṣfahānī, Ibn Fūrak, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), and ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī.
