This chapter sets up the critical themes of the book, including the First World global expansion of taiko in the early 21st century; Asian American community building in relation to multicultural ideologies; Asian American social justice work; taiko as both music and noise; taiko and cultural sustainability; and taiko as Asian American affective work. The key research methodologies of participant-observation ethnography, autoethnography, and multimedia ethnomusicology are discussed. A brief history and literature review of post-WW2 North American kumi-daiko is offered.
