Despite significant global progress throughout the 20th century, in recent years, grave threats to equal rights have come into sharp relief. This chapter explores the importance and transformative potential of constitutional rights for advancing equality globally. Comprehensive protections against discrimination, alongside guarantees of the fundamental rights to health and education, can establish a powerful foundation for upholding equal rights even in the face of political backlash or instability. Global surveys show that significant majorities in most countries believe strongly in the inherent dignity of every human being; over the past 75 years, international treaties and agreements have enshrined these values. Translating these commitments into enforceable constitutional rights is a critical next step for ensuring their impact.
