Ensuring that constitutions contain comprehensive protections for equal rights and that these rights are realized requires action by everyone. This chapter offers examples of how lawyers, civil society, judges, and individual citizens and residents across countries can and have strengthened protections for equal rights in their constitutions and maximized their impact. Drawing on case studies of national successes, this chapter explores efforts including large-scale advocacy campaigns to enact constitutional amendments, broad public participation in constitutional drafting, and strategic litigation targeting laws that conflict with constitutional protections of equality. This chapter also presents other strategies and potential pathways to strengthening equal rights, including coalition building, norm change, and public education on constitutional rights.
